Most people know the University of Copenhagen as Denmark’s oldest and most tradition-rich institution of learning—situated in the very heart of the city, where generations of students have crossed Frue Plads in their pursuit of knowledge. The university was founded in 1479, after King Christian I obtained permission from the Pope to establish a university in Copenhagen.

For more than five centuries, the university has been a center of learning, research, and social change. From here, scientific discoveries, intellectual debates, and historic speeches have flowed out into the world. And even today, when you stand before the classical main building from 1836, you feel that both tradition and curiosity continue to live on—side by side.
Here’s a classic and rather funny story from the University of Copenhagen, told and retold by both students and lecturers for years:

Today’s Anecdote

The anecdote of the brilliant physics student and the trash bins

A young, extraordinarily gifted physics student—let’s call him Emil—was studying at the Niels Bohr Institute and was known for his exceptional intelligence. He could do quantum field theory without notes, recited Pi to 200 decimals, and sometimes corrected his professors’ calculations (to their great irritation).
But one day in the cafeteria, life handed him a far more down-to-earth challenge.
After finishing lunch, he found himself standing before the three color-coded trash bins: green (food waste), blue (paper), and black (general waste).
In his hand he held: a used napkin, a banana peel, a small milk carton with leftovers, and a plastic fork. And then… he completely froze.
He stared at the bins for a long time, making small hand gestures back and forth as if working through a four-step proof, and muttered to himself:
“But if the plastic has been in contact with organic waste, then… which entropic system applies?” People began forming a line behind him, but Emil was fully caught up in an inner crisis of waste-disposal philosophy.
At last, a cleaning lady came over, smiled, and said:
“Sweetie, it all ends up in the same container out back anyway.”
He stared at her silently for ten seconds… and then tossed everything into a single bin. Later, he was seen in the library drawing a flowchart of municipal waste management—“just to be sure next time.”

Moral?
High intelligence solves many problems—but sometimes it’s practical sense, and a calm cleaning lady, that saves the day.
