Frederiksberg Palace is not only a beautiful baroque castle overlooking the gardens and the zoo—it has also, for more than 150 years, been home to the Royal Danish Army Officers’ Academy. This has created a rich blend of royal pomp, military precision, and, at times, downright absurd cadet comedy.

Here is one of the most legendary, funny, and 100% true anecdotes, still retold with laughter among cadets and senior officers alike

It all took place on a spring day in the 1980s, when a Polish delegation was scheduled to visit Denmark, including Frederiksberg Palace and the Officers’ Academy. Preparations had been made for an official reception: a guard of honour made up of cadets stood in polished boots with rigid stares, and the program included a traditional cannon salute—fired with blank charges in honour of foreign guests. Everything was planned down to the smallest detail.
But, a week earlier, a cadet class had secretly practiced the salute procedure—and for fun had added a small twist to the ritual. Instead of shouting the official command “FIRE!” one of them had, during an unofficial rehearsal, shouted: “Na zdrowie!” (Polish for “Cheers!”)
Everyone laughed, and it quickly became an inside cadet joke: “We fire for Poland—we toast with gunpowder!” Then came the day…
At the ceremony, the cadets stood ready by the cannon. Flags waved. The Polish delegation approached. And at the very moment the firing command was to be given, one cadet (let’s call him “Jørgensen”), forgot himself for a split second—and shouted, loud and clear:
“Na zdrowie!” BOOM!—the salute went off. The guests froze. Danish defense staff turned pale. And the Polish ambassador… burst out laughing and began to clap! He turned to his delegation and said:
“They speak our language! The Danish military is more cultivated than I thought!” Cadet Jørgensen had a very serious conversation with his superior, but got off with a warning—and a reputation that still follows him in officer circles as: “The one who fired with a toast.”
Since then, cadets at Frederiksberg Palace have adopted an unofficial ritual: if anyone says “Na zdrowie!” during exam training, they have to buy coffee for the entire class.

Frederiksberg Palace also contains:
A secret wine cellar, used during World War II for both storage and officers’ “unofficial” parties. An old rumour that the upper dormitories are haunted by a deceased adjutant who marched there at night in the 1950s—until it was discovered that it was actually just a very sleepwalking cadet with tinnitus.
