There are many fantastic anecdotes about tourists in Copenhagen, but one story has become a little cult classic among metro staff and hotel receptionists—because it combines misunderstanding, politeness, and the city’s cycling culture in the most charming way.
Today’s Anecdote
The American, the City Bike, and “the Danish Highway Patrol”
An American tourist—let’s call him Bob from Ohio—was visiting Copenhagen for the first time. He had heard that the city is bike-friendly and decided to do as the locals do and rent a city bike. Everything went fine.
Until he—like so many before him—mistook the bike lane for a kind of “Danish jogging path”… and thought that cars drove in the middle, pedestrians walked to the left—and cyclists should stick to the far right, where people jog. Result? Bob cycled straight into oncoming bike traffic
Danish commuters, coming at 25 km/h in suits and with angry eyes, began ringing their bells, shouting things like “Right side, man!” and “Not there, Sherlock!” Bob simply waved politely and called out:
“You guys are really into fitness here! This is great!”
And then came the best part: A young police officer on a bike pulled up next to him and said: “Sir, do you realize you’re riding the wrong way on the bike lane?” Bob, somewhat proud, replied: “Oh! Are you the Danish highway patrol?” The officer blinked, nodded, and said:
“Sure. Let’s call it that.”
He then turned Bob around and escorted him back to the correct lane, while Bob shouted to his wife, who was walking nearby:
“Honey, I’ve got a police escort! Copenhagen is amazing!”
Bob ended up giving the bike cop a little “medal” made from his Metro ticket when he returned the bike—and later wrote a TripAdvisor review titled:
“Five stars – even the traffic police are cool here.”
